A technical plan for success: Preparing to optimize 4,000+ sites at NYU

Date: Saturday, July 15, 2017
Time: 11:00 - 11:45 am (EDT) (UTC-04:00)
Location: Room 1053
Format: General Lecture Session

Session description

Universities today leverage WordPress Multisite to empower students, update faculty content and course notes, and bring entire communities together. With large multisites and small teams, it is common for performance headaches to occur: faculty can’t update or create course sites, students can’t blog and share their stories, and the internal dev team struggles with losing insight and coverage over such a large network. To avoid small issues from becoming large bottlenecks, internal teams need to be set up with a winning process.

In this session we’ll lay the groundwork on what that process should look like beginning with the technical audit and leading to the implementation of a full webops toolkit. We’ll cover this session utilizing our client, NYU, as an example along the way.

The key takeaways

You’ll learn about performing technical audits as we take a look at testing the following components:

  • Code review
  • Technical bottlenecks
  • Security
  • Themes
  • Plugins
  • Server architecture

We’ll also explore a process audit which measures the effectiveness of:

  • Deployment (git)
  • Build systems
  • Testing (bhat)
  • Team communication
  • Proactive monitoring

You'll also leave this session with the results of our work with NYU.
